Graduate Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering
About Us
The Graduate Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering (EOE) was established in August, 2002. The institute is located in the Engineering Building of Chang Gung University in Kweisan, a highly developed town between Taipei and Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in the northern Taiwan. The campus is about 20 km from Taipei City, and is only 3 km away from a major high-tech industrial park. Both the downtown and the airport are easily accessible within 0.5-1 hour, depending on the traffic conditions. We began with 15 graduate students in the master’s program for the first year. This program normally takes two years of study with an approved thesis. Students who meet all the academic requirements are granted with the degree of Master of Science (M.S.) in Electro-Optical Engineering. Over the first three years, we invested more than NT$30 million dollars in establishing laboratories, facilities, and equipment for both research and teaching. The institute now has eight full-time faculty members and about 56 students studying for their M.S. In addition, the institute is closely associated with the other departments of the College of Engineering, especially the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE). The department (EE) offers additional 20+ faculty/staff members to support our curriculum, and we admit 2 new students into the doctoral program of Electro-Optical Engineering each year.

Vision & Goals:

Electro-Optical Engineering has emerged as one of the leading disciplines in the modern industry in Taiwan. After the successful implementation of the semiconductor industry in the eighties and nineties, the local government decided to include the electro-optical engineering sector in the second trillion-dollar (TWD) industry. This sector includes flat panel displays, light emitting diodes, optical data storage systems, optical communications, solar cells, etc. Therefore, our goals are to supply well-trained engineers to the industry, to research key technologies in electro-optical engineering, and to develop competent faculty for high quality education. In addition to the training of professional courses, we also pay attention to the education of students' personal development and independent research capability training.
The curriculum and research disciplines are currently planned as followings:
(A) Optoelectronic Semiconductors
(B) Optoelectronic system design and displays
(C) Biophotonics
The demands for novel optoelectronic research and development have created both challenges and opportunities for us in the 21st century. We are strongly committed to high quality education, and will continue to encourage cooperative research with the growing optoelectronics industry.
